New York Cares is launching programs this January to help struggling New Yorkers access important financial resources. In the wake of the hurricane, these resources are more important than ever. Individuals and families will receive assistance from volunteers as they apply for food stamps to make ends meet, or seek financial aid to pay for college.
FAFSA Prep Program
Completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a crucial step for low-income teens and their families to make attending college a reality. Through the FAFSA Prep Program, volunteers will help families at 40 schools and community centers throughout New York City complete their applications in time to make informed decisions about financial aid packages and college acceptances.
Many of our Team Leaders and volunteers have little or no financial aid experience - you just need to be able to follow instruction and have basic computer skills to get started. Our comprehensive one-day training session will give you all the financial aid knowledge you will need.
The program requires a six-week commitment from mid-January through February, and teams will work at a different school each week. Click here to sign up for a team. Once you sign up for a FAFSA Completion Mobile Team, information about training dates and site locations will be provided. For more information about the program, please email Fafsa.Prep@newyorkcares.org
Food Stamps Screening with NYCfNAC
Food Stamps are a vital resource for individuals who often have to choose among competing priorities like food, rent, and clothes. Help low-income New Yorkers determine their eligibility for food stamps by reaching out from a call center at NYCfNAC in the Lower East Side. Volunteers will also build a strong relationship with applicants by overseeing the enrollment process until successfully completed.
A bi-weekly commitment from February through May is required, and volunteers will receive training on Saturday, January 19th. Click here to sign up for an information session. For more information about the program, please email heeyeon.park@newyorkcares.org.
