"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
— Margaret Mead
New York City needs volunteers to bridge the gaps and build a stronger city. New York Cares creates thousands of ways each month for you to get involved and start changing lives.
Create an online account and attend a 45-minute orientation to get started. From there, you can search our extensive database to find your way to volunteer.
Please note: You must be at least 18 years old to participate in our year-round volunteering. See Days of Service and Youth Service Clubs to learn more about youth opportunities.
About Our Projects
We help children, adults, and the community through thousands of flexibly scheduled, hands-on projects, including:
- Helping homeless kids get their first library cards.
- Tutoring children and adults.
- Playing sports with children who lack access to recreational facilities.
- Revitalizing parks, schools, and neighborhoods.
- Teaching financial literacy and job skills to low-income adults.
- Befriending lonely and isolated seniors.
- Preparing and serving meals to the hungry.
- Caring for abused and neglected animals.
Choose Your Commitment
Choose the type of volunteering that's right for you:
- Flexible – Many of our projects are ongoing and require no commitment; simply volunteer as much as you can.
- Short-term – Certain projects, such as children's or adult education, require four to six week commitments.
- Long-term – Projects such as the Kaplan SAT Prep and Tax Prep require longer commitments, from six months to a full academic year.
